I froze.
“What?”
“Please, Daniel. Don’t look at our babies!”
She broke down so completely that a nurse stepped closer, worried Anna might be suffering from a medical complication.
I moved toward the bed slowly.
“Anna, they’re our sons. Of course I’m going to look at them.”
She shook her head desperately.
“You won’t understand.”
I gently lowered the edge of one blanket.
And then I saw what had frightened her.
