I (28F) have been friends with Sam (30M) for years. He recently asked to borrow $1000, explaining it was for overdue bills.
As a good friend, I lent him the money without hesitation. However, a mutual friend told me Sam actually used the money for gambling at a shady casino.
When I confronted Sam about this, he admitted to it but justified that he ‘needed a break’. I was furious that he lied and risked his financial well-being like that.
I refused to repay the loan, pointing out that he manipulated me. Sam insists he’ll pay me back once he wins big.
Am I the a*****e for standing my ground and refusing to repay the loan given his deceitful behavior? I feel betrayed and used, but I also don’t want to ruin our friendship.
