“What did he say?”
“That reopening everything wouldn’t change what happened to me.”
I looked at him.
Then he looked at the photocopy.
“He knew your family had never been told?”
“Yes.”
“And he left it that way?”
Brian didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Then he looked at the photocopy.
“That’s why you never said anything?”
“I kept waiting for him to tell you himself.”
I stared at him.
“That’s why you never said anything?”
“At first.”
His jaw tightened.
“Then he started treating me like this. I still hoped he’d stop before I had to be the one to tell Emily what kind of secret her father was keeping.”
“Is that why you brought this?”
He glanced toward the dining room.
“After tonight, I knew he wasn’t going to.”
I looked down at the paper.
“Is that why you brought this?”
Brian nodded.
“I had a feeling dinner might finally force the issue.”
Emily stood in the doorway.
I heard movement behind me.
Emily stood in the doorway.
“What are you talking about?”
Brian closed his eyes.
