Lily shrugged, embarrassed and pleased at the same time.
“I wanted the real day,” she said.

Then Lily asked, very quietly, “Why didn’t Dad say anything?”
Sometimes, I still felt like I had to protect Lily from the intricacies of grown-up social circles.

“No,” I said. “Usually it makes it worse later.”
She nodded.
“Well, there’s a something more going on. That’s why Mom is so obsessed with the photos.”
