Military police entered my office with the kind of calm that told me they had already decided the situation was serious.

The taller one, a captain with watchful eyes, paused just inside the doorway. “Colonel, I apologize for the interruption.”

Across from me, General Halvorsen had been discussing the transition schedule for my new command. A half-empty cup of coffee sat untouched beside my welcome packet. Through the window behind him, morning sunlight cut across the base in bright, disciplined lines, as if nothing ugly had followed me here from the house where my hair still lay scattered across a pillow.

I stood. “Report.”
