I Found a Shovel Under My 7-Year-Old Son’s Bed – When I Tried to Take It, He Cried and Said, ‘Dad Told Me to Keep It There’

“Your dad always hated spoilers.”

We hurried home.

Neither of us spoke as we carried the cedar chest home.

It felt wrong somehow.

As though Ethan were still guiding us.

I found the camera charger in the box beneath our television.

An hour later, the screen flickered to life.

Ethan appeared sitting on the back porch.

He looked thinner than I remembered.

But he was smiling.

“Hi.”

He laughed softly.

“If this video is playing, then my plan worked.”

Noah leaned toward the television.

“Dad.”

Ethan smiled at the camera.

“Hi, buddy.”

I laughed through my tears.

It was exactly how he used to greet Noah when he came home from work.

Then Ethan’s eyes shifted toward the camera.
