Mark closed his eyes.
“Lena—”
“Why did you bring me here?”
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
Ana pressed the gun closer to his chest.
“Tell her.”
Mark looked at me.
“Our anniversary wasn’t the reason.”
The words cut through me.
“What was?”
He lifted his bound hands.
“Seven years ago, before we got married, I worked for a company that handled digital security for hotels.”
I waited.
“This hotel was a client.”
My mind went back to check-in.
Victor shaking Mark’s hand.
The pause before he smiled.
I had thought he was reading the reservation.
He had recognized him.
“What did you do?”
“I found hidden files on their network.”
“The recordings?”
Mark nodded.
“They had years of footage. Affairs. Drug use. Escorts. Private conversations. They used it to blackmail guests.”
“And you reported it?”
His silence answered.
Ana laughed bitterly.
“No. He stole it.”
Mark looked at her.
“I copied the files.”
“For money?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Insurance.”
