The Hotel Maid Knocked on Our Door at 3 AM and Whispered, ‘You Need to Leave Right Now’

The word made no sense.

“Against what?”

“Victor.”

Mark leaned against the elevator wall.

“I confronted him. He offered me $200,000 to erase what I found and sign a confidentiality agreement.”

“Did you take it?”

“No.”

Ana’s voice turned cold.

“He took more.”

Mark looked at the floor.

My stomach tightened.

“How much?”

“$500,000.”

I stepped back.

Seven years earlier, Mark had told me his software company had been acquired.

He said the money helped us buy our first house.

Paid off my student loans.

Covered the fertility treatments that gave us our son.

Half a million dollars had built our life.

And it had come from this hotel.

“You blackmailed them.”

“I told myself I was making them pay.”

“You kept the recordings?”

“One copy.”

“Of strangers?”

“As protection.”

Ana’s eyes filled with anger.

“My brother found that copy.”

Mark looked at her.

“What?”

“He found your name in Victor’s private files.”

She stepped closer.

“He contacted you 11 months ago.”

Mark went pale.

I looked between them.

“Did he?”
