The Hotel Maid Knocked on Our Door at 3 AM and Whispered, ‘You Need to Leave Right Now’

Now I understood.

Avoidance wasn’t a flaw.

It was his method of survival.

“What changed?” I asked.

Mark wiped blood from his mouth.

“Mateo sent me a file before he disappeared.”

Ana froze.

“What file?”

“A list of guests Victor had targeted.”

“Why didn’t you give it to police?”

“There was a detective’s name in it.”

“Which detective?”

“Paul.”

Ana’s face changed.

“That’s who took Mateo’s missing-person report.”

Mark nodded.

“I didn’t know who to trust.”

“So you did nothing for 11 months?”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“I contacted a federal investigator three weeks ago.”

My anger faltered.

“Then why come here?”

“They needed the original server. Victor keeps it off the network now.”
