The Hotel Maid Knocked on Our Door at 3 AM and Whispered, ‘You Need to Leave Right Now’

The black drive wasn’t storage.

It was a transmitter.

Victor was arrested. So were both guards.

Detective Paul was taken into custody before sunrise.

The server contained thousands of recordings.

It also contained Mateo’s final hours.

He had discovered the surveillance room and tried to copy the files.

Victor’s guards caught him in the service corridor.

The footage ended before his death, but location records led police to a wooded property owned by one of Victor’s companies.

Mateo’s body was found there six days later.

Ana called me after they identified him.

Neither of us knew what to say.

Finally, she whispered, “At least he isn’t missing anymore.”

I cried after we hung up.

For her brother.

For my father.

For every person whose worst moment had been turned into someone else’s income.

And for the marriage I no longer understood.
