Mark ignored her, frantically tearing through the house, ripping open drawers, tossing Margaret’s few remaining belongings across the floor, desperately hunting for the original passbook and the life insurance documents. An hour later, covered in sweat, his expensive vacation shirt clinging to his back, he collapsed to his knees in the ruined living room.
“Mark!” Chloe snapped, her voice losing all its sweet, honeyed tone. She snatched the papers from the table, her eyes scanning the divorce petition and the frozen bank statement. “Wait. This says she gets everything? The money is frozen? What about the life insurance you promised me?”
“She took it! She took the evidence!” Mark sobbed, clutching his hair. “I’m ruined, Chloe. I don’t have access to a single dime. The joint accounts are drained. I… I have nothing.”
