The woman slowly reached into her pocket.
She unfolded the same creased card I had seen earlier.
“Mothers First Emergency Shelter.”
She held it up with trembling fingers.
“I left three days ago.”
The restaurant became so quiet that I could hear the fryer in the kitchen.
Daniel looked at her gently.
“Did they help?”
“For three days.”
“What happened?”
“My three days were over.” She swallowed. “There were too many women waiting. So I left.”
