“What?”
“I’m offering charity.” She shrugged. “You people always complain no matter what.”
The pregnant woman wrapped both arms around herself.
“I don’t want it anymore.”
The woman shrugged.
“Suit yourself.”
The pregnant woman whispered, “I was just hungry.”
Scoffing, the woman said, “Then starve.”
My chair scraped loudly against the floor as I stood.
“What is your problem?” I demanded.
My husband gently placed a hand on my arm.
“One second.”
I looked at him.
His expression had changed.
The calm look I knew so well had disappeared.
Now he looked focused.
Deliberate.
He leaned close enough that only I could hear.
