Barry stepped forward.
“That’s a lie.”
Margaret turned toward him.
“You were dismissed because you became unreliable.”
“You fired me because I found Rachel’s letters.”
Evelyn swayed.
“What letters?”
“That’s a lie.”
I went to my bedroom and pulled a cardboard box from the closet.
Inside were returned letters, postal receipts, birthday cards, and pictures of Emma growing up.
Every envelope carried Evelyn’s address.
I dropped the box at Margaret’s feet.
“I wrote every year.”
She barely looked down.
