Just then, Margaret’s phone rang.
She answered.
Listened.
Then looked directly at me.
“The bank’s forensic division has completed its preliminary review.”
Grant whispered one word.
“No.”
Margaret ended the call.
“They’ve frozen every corporate credit facility.”
“The engagement financing.”
“The expansion loan.”
“The operating line.”
“Everything.”
Mother staggered backward into a chair.
Vanessa grabbed the edge of the table.
Grant remained perfectly still.
Then he asked the question none of them expected to matter.
“What happens next?”
I closed the loan folder.
“The investigators begin asking who created the guarantee.”
“And unlike family…”
“They don’t accept ‘it was only a joke’ as an explanation.”
