Just 72 hours after bringing my newborn home, my husband locked me out of my estate. He hired guards to block my way while he plotted to steal my hidden family assets. “I’ve won, Clara,” he texted and sent his mother to Miami on my dime to celebrate his “perfect takeover.” He thought he was untouchable. He had no idea that while he was raising a glass to his victory, I was making one single phone call. In exactly 5 minutes, he was about to lose the only thing he thought he permanently owned.

I squinted at the screen. Beneath the wine cellar, heavily reinforced lines indicated a hidden sub-level.

“It’s a vault,” Jennifer said. “A reinforced, subterranean bunker built directly into the bedrock.”

I stared at the screen, my mind spinning. “My mother never told me about a vault. I grew up in that house. I’ve lived there for years. There is no vault.”

“She hid it,” Jennifer said definitively. “She sealed it off. And whatever is inside that vault, the Vance family believes it belongs to them. Or, more likely, they believe it contains the original, un-redacted documents that could put the surviving members of their family in federal prison for the rest of their natural lives. Brent didn’t lock you out tonight to claim marital assets. He locked you out to buy himself an uninterrupted window of time.”

“Time for what?” Molly asked, though I could see the terror dawning in her eyes.
