Panic, hot and jagged, began to claw at the edges of my mind. I pressed the silver button on the doorbell camera, expecting to route directly to the cell phone of my husband, Brent. He was supposed to be landing in Miami right about now, having hastily flown out with his overbearing mother, Diane, mere hours after I was discharged from the maternity ward. They claimed it was a pre-planned, unavoidable family estate matter. I had been too exhausted by labor to fight it.
The camera clicked, but the two-way video feed didn’t initialize. Instead, the small speaker above the lens crackled to life, playing a pre-recorded audio file. Brent’s voice echoed out into the storm, mixing with the crack of thunder overhead. It was smooth, dripping with an unearned, aristocratic confidence, and it chilled me to the marrow of my bones.
