“Daddy made us promise never to tell what he did to our first mommy.”
Ellie’s eyes filled with tears. She squeezed my wrist tighter.
“But now…” she whispered, “…he’s doing the same thing to you.”
A floorboard creaked outside the bedroom.
Ellie instantly disappeared beneath her blanket.
A shadow stretched across the crack beneath the door.
Then Michael knocked softly.
“Everything okay in there?”
“…he’s doing the same thing to you.”
I looked toward the door.
For the first time since I’d met the man I loved, I honestly didn’t know the answer.
Michael opened the door. He looked from Ellie to me.
“Is everything okay?”
Ellie stayed hidden beneath the blanket.
I forced a smile.
“She had a bad dream.”
