Shortly before her death, she told me she had placed important family documents inside it.
Warren offered to collect everything from her apartment.
A week later, he claimed the storage building had suffered an electrical fire.
He said nothing had survived.
I believed him.
Inside the suitcase were the original papers for a trust my mother had created for me.
The trust contained savings, shares and income from two small commercial properties.
Warren had told me the investments collapsed during a recession.
They had not.
He had forged my signature, redirected the income and used part of it to support Celeste and Mara.
The rest had passed through private accounts under names I did not recognize.
I held one bank statement in both hands.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars had moved through the accounts over fifteen years.
“This is my mother’s money.”
“Yes,” Theo said.
“He stole it.”
“Mara made copies of everything before Dad could reach the storage unit.”
“How did he know she found it?”
“He monitors one of her accounts. The storage company returned a deposit.”
Theo looked toward the baby.
“Mara was already pregnant. When she confronted him, Dad threatened to say she had stolen the documents.”
“Why didn’t she go to the police?”
“She was afraid. Her mother had spent years teaching her to depend on him.”
I understood that better than I wanted to.
I looked at my son.
“You knew all this for months. Why didn’t you contact me?”
Pain crossed his face.
“I tried writing three times.”
“I never received anything.”
“Dad returned the letters.”
My stomach dropped.
“What?”
“The first came back marked unknown recipient. The second had your name crossed out. After that, I called the house.”
“I never heard from you.”
“He answered.”
Theo looked down.
“He said you knew everything. He said you didn’t want me back.”
