“That is not true.”
“I know that now.”
He swallowed.
“But at the time, it sounded like something you might let him decide.”
I closed my eyes.
There was nothing I could say to defend myself.
My silence had made the lie believable.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
Theo did not tell me it was all right.
It was not.
The baby began crying.
Theo lifted her gently.
“She needs feeding.”
He prepared a bottle from the bag beside the basket.
His movements were careful and practiced.
“How long have you been helping Mara?”
“Most of the pregnancy.”
“Are you two…”
“No.”
He almost smiled.
“She’s my sister.”
The word sounded strange and natural at the same time.
Theo explained that Mara’s partner had died in a construction accident before Wren was born.
She had no close family left besides the half-brother she discovered by accident.
When labor began early, Theo went to the hospital with her.
After complications required surgery, she made him promise to keep Wren away from Warren.
“She thinks he’ll use the baby to control her,” Theo said.
“She’s probably right.”
I looked at the newborn.
Warren’s granddaughter.
My son’s niece.
A baby born into a family built from two separate versions of the truth.
Then tires rolled across the wet driveway.
Theo froze.
Warren was home.
The front door opened.
Warren stepped inside, loosening his tie.
He saw Theo.
Then the baby.
Then the suitcase.
All the color left his face.
“Where did you get that?”
No hello.
No surprise at seeing the son he had not seen in a year.
Only fear of the suitcase.
I stood.
“My mother’s suitcase?”
Warren closed the door carefully.
“Eliza, listen to me.”
“That was not an answer.”
Theo placed the baby in the basket and stood beside me.
Warren’s eyes hardened.
“You have no right to be here.”
“He has more right than you do,” I said.
Warren looked at me as though I had spoken in someone else’s voice.
I spread the papers across the dining table.
The trust documents.
The forged signatures.
The photographs.
The bank transfers.
Warren approached slowly.
“You don’t understand any of this.”
“Then explain.”
“I was helping Celeste.”
