“You cannot let them take that.”
Detective Mercer appeared in the doorway.
Nathan slowly lowered the phone.
His face went pale.
Mercer looked directly at him.
“Mr. Cole.”
Nathan stared.
“What are you doing here?”
“Executing the next phase of an investigation.”
Gloria gripped Walter’s arm.
“What investigation?”
Mercer did not answer her.
He looked at me.
“Ms. Cole, may I speak with you and your counsel privately?”
Nathan interrupted.
“She’s my wife.”
Mercer’s expression did not change.
“And she has counsel.”
Nathan looked at Rebecca.
Then at me.
“What did you do?”
I said nothing.
Security escorted the three of them into the hallway.
Walter did not resist.
Gloria shouted.
Nathan threatened lawsuits.
Their voices disappeared.
Detective Mercer closed the door.
Then he looked at Rebecca.
“We obtained a warrant related to financial records and evidence
connected to the assault.”
My stomach tightened.
“What did you find?”
He sat down.
“More than we expected.”
I remembered Nathan’s credit card application.
My missing documents.
His locked basement cabinet.
“What?”
Mercer opened a folder.
“Several identification documents belonging to you.”
“My passport?”
“Yes.”
