You think you know better than me?
Then the sound of the impact.
My scream.
Nathan went white.
I let the recording continue.
Leave her there.
The broken leg will be her punishment for not knowing how to obey.
Gloria backed toward the wall.
Walter closed his eyes.
Nathan lunged toward the recorder.
Hospital security entered immediately.
“Step back.”
One guard said.
Nathan froze.
Rebecca stood.
“The original file has already been preserved.”
She said.
“Taking the device accomplishes nothing.”
Nathan looked at me.
“You recorded us?”
“I forgot it was running.”
“That’s illegal.”
Rebecca almost smiled.
“No.”
She said.
“It is not that simple.”
Nathan’s confidence cracked.
Gloria pointed at me.
“She provoked us.”
Rebecca turned.
“Do not speak to my client.”
Walter finally looked at me.
“I’m sorry.”
Gloria snapped.
“Walter.”
He ignored her.
“I should have called for help.”
“You should have.”
I said.
His eyes filled with tears.
I felt nothing.
Not yet.
Nathan began pacing.
“This is insane.”
“You’re destroying our family.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
“You did that in the kitchen.”
His phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
Declined it.
It rang again.
Then Gloria’s phone rang.
Then Walter’s.
All three stared at one another.
Rebecca looked at me.
Something was happening.
Nathan answered.
“What?”
His expression changed.
“What do you mean they’re inside?”
Silence.
Then:
“No.”
