The five-dollar pie slices sat on thick white plates between us, the cherry filling a dark, glossy red under the fluorescent lights of the Maple Street Cafe. Daniel sat with his large hands wrapped around his coffee cup, rotating it in slow circles on the formica table.<\/p>\n
\u201cIs the cherry too sweet, Daniel?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n
He cleared his throat, a dry rasp that made the waitress pause as she walked past with a tray of clean glasses.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is fine, Sybil,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He did not look at me, his eyes remaining fixed on his thumb as he turned the cup again, the ceramic bottom scraping against a dried ring of spilled cream.<\/p>\n
\u201cDid you want to go by the county clerk\u2019s office before they close?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have the paper.\u201d<\/p>\n
The seventy-two dollars we had paid for the wedding license felt like a weight in my coat pocket, the crisp receipt folded twice beside my keys. I touched my collarbone, my fingers finding the familiar shape of my silver necklace where it rested against my wool collar. The small silver leaf was cold from the walk from the car.<\/p>\n
\u201cDo you think the rain will keep up all afternoon?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cProbably,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He cleared his throat again, his fingers tightening on the cup.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe should have asked for more napkins,\u201d I said, pointing to a small drop of red juice that had fallen on his sleeve.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have a handkerchief,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He did not reach for it, but turned the cup another half-inch to the right, his eyes tracing the red vinyl seam of the booth.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy are you not looking at me, Daniel?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n
He stood up so quickly his knees hit the underside of the table, making the salt shaker wobble.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will wait by the door,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He did not look back as he walked toward the cash register, his shoulders hunched inside his dark wool coat.<\/p>\n
