She grabbed her chest and went down. I couldn\u2019t just leave her there.\u201d<br \/>\nNick stared at me like I\u2019d spoken a foreign language.<br \/>\nHis jaw tightened.<br \/>\nHe took two slow steps toward me and lowered his voice, which somehow made it worse.<br \/>\n\u201cWas it your wife?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYour mother?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>\nHe let out a short, angry laugh and looked around at the others, like he needed witnesses for what he was about to say.<br \/>\n\u201cSo let me get this straight,\u201d he said. \u201cYou blew off an eight-thirty presentation with our biggest potential account because some random woman on the roadside looked sick.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cShe didn\u2019t look sick,\u201d I said. \u201cShe collapsed in my arms.\u201d<br \/>\nHe threw one hand up.<br \/>\n\u201cAnd because of that, we lost the account.\u201d<br \/>\nMy mouth went dry.<br \/>\nI looked toward the conference room again, as if maybe the clients would magically still be there, sitting patiently with coffee, waiting for me to explain myself.<br \/>\nThey weren\u2019t.<br \/>\nAll that was left was the smell of burnt office coffee, printer toner, and the slow death of the best opportunity our little agency had seen in months.<br \/>\n\u201cNick, I\u2019m sorry,\u201d I said. \u201cI am. But what was I supposed to do? Drive past her?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYes,\u201d he snapped.<br \/>\nThe room went even quieter.<br \/>\nFor a second, I honestly thought I\u2019d heard him wrong.<br \/>\nHe stepped closer.<br \/>\n\u201cYes, Sebastian. You were supposed to keep driving. You had a responsibility here. You had a team depending on you. You had clients waiting. We are not a charity. We are a business.\u201d<br \/>\nMy ears started ringing.<br \/>\nI\u2019d worked at that agency for almost three years.<br \/>\nI had taken late calls, skipped lunches, stayed weekends, saved bad campaigns, soothed angry customers, trained new hires, pulled numbers out of thin air when nobody else could.<br \/>\nI\u2019d been the first one in and the last one out so many times that the cleaning crew knew my daughters\u2019 names.<br \/>\nAnd now I was being told I should have left a stranger on the side of the road because a pitch mattered more.<br \/>\n\u201cNick,\u201d I said, and I heard my own voice shake. \u201cI have given everything to this place.\u201d<br \/>\nHe didn\u2019t even blink.<br \/>\n\u201cI don\u2019t care,\u201d he said. \u201cClean out your things. You\u2019re done here.\u201d<br \/>\nI just stood there.<br \/>\nMy brain refused to catch up.<br \/>\nA few people looked away.<br \/>\nA few looked at me with something like pity.<br \/>\nOne of the account managers shifted in her seat and stared down at her keyboard as if the letters suddenly fascinated her.<br \/>\nNobody said a word.<br \/>\nNick nodded toward the hallway.<br \/>\n\u201cThat\u2019s the end of it.\u201d<!--nextpage--><br \/>\nI wish I could say I walked out with dignity.<br \/>\nI wish I could say I gave him some speech about loyalty and humanity and how one day he\u2019d regret it.<br \/>\nWhat actually happened was uglier than that.<br \/>\nMy face got hot.<br \/>\nMy throat closed.<br \/>\nAnd before I could stop it, tears stung my eyes.<br \/>\nI turned away so fast I nearly dropped my bag.<br \/>\nI heard a chair scrape behind me, then nothing but the pounding of my own footsteps as I left the office I had poured myself into and walked straight into the bright morning sun like a man getting shoved out of his own life.<br \/>\nThe second I got inside my car, I locked the doors.<br \/>\nThen I gripped the steering wheel and screamed.<br \/>\nNot words\u2014just raw, broken sound.
