I met Leland Brack in the spring of 1994 and I was twenty-six and it was the easiest thing that has ever happened to me.<\/p>\n
He was gentle and he was tired and he had ten children.<\/p>\n
Their mother had died. That is what he told me and that is what everybody in Linford knew, and I never once had cause to question it.<\/p>\n
Maud was eleven. Tilly was two. There were eight in between.<\/p>\n
He asked me in the February of 1995 and I said yes before he had got the sentence out.<\/p>\n
And one week before the wedding I woke up and he was not in that house.<\/p>\n
I had the phone in my hand to ring the police when I saw a piece of paper on the kitchen table.<\/p>\n
Six words.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m sorry. I can\u2019t do this anymore.<\/em><\/p>\n He had not just gone from me. He had gone from all ten of them, and Tilly was two and Maud was eleven and the middle four did not understand what was being said to them.<\/p>\n My family told me to let the department take them. They said it kindly and they said it more than once and they were not wrong that it was not my job.<\/p>\n I was twenty-seven. I had a part-time wage and a rented house and no legal relationship to a single one of those children.<\/p>\n I adopted all ten.<\/p>\n It took two years and eleven months and it very nearly did not happen, and I am going to come back to that.<\/p>\n My parents did not speak to me for four years.<\/p>\n Men found out and did not ring again, and by about 2001 I had stopped mentioning it on a first evening, and by about 2004 I had stopped going.<\/p>\n Thirty years have gone.<\/p>\n They are forty-one down to thirty-two. There are nineteen grandchildren. Every Sunday that anybody can manage, they come to the house on Meadle Lane and we eat in shifts because the table has never been big enough.<\/p>\n Last Sunday somebody knocked at the door in the middle of it.<\/p>\n I opened it with a tea towel in my hand and there was a man on the step I had never seen in my life. Sixty-something, good coat, a document wallet under his arm.<\/p>\n \u201cMrs. Breen? I\u2019m Hollis Teague. I acted for Leland Brack.\u201d<\/p>\n I had not heard that name said out loud by another adult in about nineteen years.<\/p>\n He took an envelope out of the wallet and held it out.<\/p>\n \u201cHe asked me to bring you this today. It was the last thing he arranged.\u201d<\/p>\n And he went. Down that path and into a car, before I had got one question out.<\/p>\n I came back into a kitchen with about thirty people in it and everything stopped.<\/p>\n Maud took the tea towel out of my hand. Somebody turned the radio off.<\/p>\n They all came round me. Ten grown adults, and two of them have grey in their hair now, and they stood round a woman of fifty-seven holding an envelope.<\/p>\n I got it open.<\/p>\n One page. His handwriting, which I had not seen since a kitchen table in 1995 and which I knew instantly.<\/p>\n And the first line is:<\/p>\n By now Maud will have told you. If she hasn\u2019t, don\u2019t be angry with her \u2014 I made her promise when she was eleven.<\/em><\/p>\n In the November of 1995 there was a thing at my parents\u2019 house. Somebody\u2019s anniversary. About twenty-five people.<\/p>\n I had the adoption forms in my bag because I had collected them that week and because I was going to ask my mother a question about my father\u2019s address history for one of the sections.<\/p>\n I got them out at the end of the table.<\/p>\n And my mother came round and took them out of my hands.<\/p>\n She squared them off on the sideboard and put her hand flat on top of them.<\/p>\n And she said, to twenty-five people:<\/p>\n \u201cGive me that. Put those forms down, Oona. They\u2019re not yours and everyone in this room knows it. Sit down.\u201d<\/p>\n There was a sound from round that table. Not laughter exactly. Agreement.<\/p>\n My aunt said something about how it was very good of me but there were limits.<\/p>\n Twenty-five people. My own father. My sister.<\/p>\n Nobody said one word for me.<\/p>\n And I said, \u201cAll right, Mum,\u201d and I sat down, and I ate a pudding, and I took those forms off that sideboard at about ten o\u2019clock when everybody had moved into the front room.<\/p>\n I filled them in that night at my own kitchen table with three of them asleep on the sofa behind me.<\/p>\n My mother did not come to the hearing in 1998.
