“What exactly should I call her?” she repeated, her voice sharp enough to cut through the silence.<\/div>\n
I met her gaze without hesitation.<\/div>\n
“You’ll call her a child.”<\/div>\n
The words echoed across the intersection.<\/div>\n
For the first time since I’d known Coraline Ashford, the flawless mask she wore cracked. Only for a second\u2014but I saw it.<\/div>\n
“You would destroy everything we’ve built,” she whispered, “for them?”<\/div>\n
“I don’t even know what I’ve lost yet.”<\/div>\n
Behind us, murmurs spread through the growing crowd. Phones stayed raised, recording every second. Somewhere in the distance, church bells began ringing.<\/div>\n
The ceremony had started without me.<\/div>\n
Mave shifted Posie higher against her shoulder.<\/div>\n
“We should go,” she said quietly. “This isn’t your fight anymore.”<\/div>\n
I looked straight at her.<\/div>\n
“It has always been my fight.”<\/div>\n
She laughed once, but there was no joy in it.<\/div>\n
“Three years ago, I begged to speak to you. Your security team turned me away every single time.”<\/div>\n
I frowned.<\/div>\n
“I never knew.”<\/div>\n
“Because someone made sure you never would.”<\/div>\n
Before I could answer, Wesley stepped beside me, holding his phone.<\/div>\n
“Boss.”<\/div>\n
His expression had changed.<\/div>\n

“What is it?”<\/div>\n
He lowered his voice.<\/div>\n
“I checked the old visitor logs from the estate after she mentioned it.”<\/div>\n
My pulse quickened.<\/div>\n
“And?”<\/div>\n
“They were altered.”<\/div>\n
Mave stared at him in disbelief.<\/div>\n
“They erased my name,” she whispered.<\/div>\n
Wesley nodded grimly.<\/div>\n
“There are dozens of entries missing. Whoever did it had executive clearance.”<\/div>\n
A cold weight settled in my chest.<\/div>\n
Only three people had that authority.<\/div>\n
My father.<\/div>\n
My mother.<\/div>\n
Or…<\/div>\n
Coraline’s father.<\/div>\n
Coraline took a slow step backward.<\/div>\n
“This conversation is over.”<\/div>\n
She reached for my arm, but I pulled away.<\/div>\n
Something flickered across her face\u2014not heartbreak.<\/div>\n
Fear.<\/div>\n
Real fear.<\/div>\n
Then Posie slipped from Mave’s arms and toddled toward me before anyone could stop her.<\/div>\n
She looked up with those unmistakable gray eyes and held out a tiny silver pendant hanging around her neck.<\/div>\n
“I’ve been waiting for you,” she said with innocent certainty.<\/div>\n
I looked down.<\/div>\n
Inside the open pendant was a faded photograph.<\/div>\n
Not of Mave.<\/div>\n
Not of Posie.<\/div>\n
It was a picture of me… taken two weeks after Mave disappeared.<\/div>\n
A picture that had never been released to the public.<\/div>\n
