I MARRIED MY CHILDHOOD SWEETHEART IN HIS HOSPITAL ROOM AFTER DOCTORS SAID HE HAD ONLY MONTHS TO LIVE\u2014RIGHT AFTER WE SAID “I DO,” A NURSE WHISPERED, “BEFORE YOU LEAVE… LOOK UNDER HIS MATTRESS.”
\nI met Ben when we were eight. He was the boy who carried my backpack when it was too heavy and slipped the biggest cookie onto my lunch tray when he thought I wasn’t looking.
\nBy sixteen, everyone joked we’d end up together.
\nThey were right.
\nTwo months before our wedding, Ben collapsed at work.
\nThe diagnosis shattered everything.
\nAn aggressive cancer.
\nToo advanced.
\nToo late.
\nThe doctors quietly told us he probably had only a few months left.
\nI looked at the wedding invitations we’d already mailed and thought,
\nNone of this matters anymore.
\nSo we canceled everything.
\nNo ballroom.
\nNo flowers.
\nNo first dance.
\nInstead, a hospital chaplain married us in Ben’s room.
\nI wore blue jeans, a white shirt, and a cheap veil one of the nurses found during her lunch break.
\nBen insisted on wearing the ridiculous black bow tie I’d bought for our original wedding.
\nIt looked absurd with his hospital pajamas.
\nHe said,
\n“A groom has standards.”
\nEveryone cried.
\nEven the nurses.
\nAfter the ceremony, Ben squeezed my hand.
\n“Best day of my life.”
\nI truly believed it was mine too.
\nThen a nurse caught me alone in the hallway.
\nShe checked that Ben couldn’t hear us.
\n“Don’t tell him I told you this.”
\nMy heart stopped.
\nShe leaned closer.
\n“Before you leave tonight…”
\n“Look under his mattress. He’s lying to you. He and his doctor have A PLAN.”
\n“He doesn’t know I’ve seen it.”
\nThen she disappeared.
\nI returned to my husband’s room, smiling like nothing had happened.
\nBut all I could think about…
\nwas what he’d hidden beneath his hospital bed.
\nI waited until Ben shuffled toward the bathroom with his IV pole.
\nThe second the door clicked shut…
\nI carefully lifted the mattress.
