Little Emilia was sleeping peacefully, her tiny face resting against my chest. She was so small and innocent that it was hard to believe that her birth had brought our family into a courtroom.<\/p>\n

\u201cMrs. Mileva,\u201d the judge said, \u201cyour children claim that you are no longer capable of making decisions for yourself. They want to take control of your medical care, your property, and guardianship of the baby.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at my daughter, Silvia.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you really think I\u2019ve lost my mind?\u201d<\/p>\n

Finally, she raised her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, you\u2019re seventy-nine years old. Three months ago, you came home from the hospital with a newborn and announced that she was your daughter. You refuse to tell us who the father is, where the baby came from, or why you intend to leave her your entire estate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t left her my entire estate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot yet,\u201d my son, Mikhail, said coldly. \u201cBut your lawyer has already prepared the documents.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was more anger than concern in his voice.<\/p>\n

Only six months earlier, my children had called me every Sunday. They brought me flowers for my birthday, took pictures with me, and told everyone how much they loved their mother.<\/p>\n

But everything changed when they learned I was pregnant.<\/p>\n

Silvia said I was bringing shame upon the family. Mikhail insisted that I end the pregnancy immediately.<\/p>\n

When I refused, they accused my doctor of manipulating me. Then they began questioning me about whether I had signed any documents with a lawyer.<\/p>\n

That was when I realized their real fear had nothing to do with my health.<\/p>\n

They were afraid that the new baby might become one of my legal heirs.<\/p>\n

But I said none of this in court.<\/p>\n

The judge examined my medical records.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to these reports, the pregnancy was carefully monitored by a team of doctors. They also state that you were fully conscious, mentally competent, and understood all the risks.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThose doctors were paid,\u201d Mikhail interrupted. \u201cOur mother is a wealthy woman. With her money, she can buy any report she wants.\u201d<\/p>\n

The judge gave him a stern look.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou will speak only when you are asked a question.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mikhail fell silent, but I saw him clench his fist.<\/p>\n

Then Silvia\u2019s lawyer stood up.<\/p>\n

\u201cMrs. Mileva, is it true that your husband died forty-six years ago?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd that you never remarried after his death?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s correct.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen how do you explain the birth of this child?\u201d<\/p>\n

A murmur swept through the courtroom.<\/p>\n

I held Emilia a little tighter.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am prepared to explain everything, but only when the other person involved in this story arrives.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat other person?\u201d the judge asked.<\/p>\n

I looked toward the door.<\/p>\n

It was closed.<\/p>\n

He had promised me he would come that morning. But the hearing had already been going on for forty minutes, and his seat was still empty.<\/p>\n

Silvia turned toward me in horror.<\/p>\n

Emilia woke up and began moving restlessly. I tried to calm her, but my hands were trembling.<\/p>\n

The judge watched me for several seconds before asking:<\/p>\n
