There was simply an empty space where his wife used to be.
Then Ben Said Something Strange
One Saturday, after finishing their swim, father and son entered the men’s changing room.
While his father was collecting their towels, Ben suddenly grabbed his arm.
“Daddy.”
His father turned around.
Ben was pointing toward a locker a few feet away.

“Daddy… he has Mommy in there.”

“No, Daddy. It’s Mommy’s.”
The Locker Was Still Open
The stranger soon walked toward the showers, leaving the locker slightly open.
A towel was caught in the door.
Ben continued staring at it.
His father knew he shouldn’t touch another person’s belongings.
But something about his son’s certainty wouldn’t let him walk away.
He looked toward the showers.
Nobody was watching.
Slowly, he stepped closer.
Then he opened the locker.
For several seconds, he couldn’t understand what he was seeing.

Then the Shower Stopped
Suddenly, the sound of running water disappeared.

Slow, wet footsteps approaching from behind.
His father turned around.

He looked directly at him.

“You weren’t supposed to find that.”
The father couldn’t move.

“But if you really want to know what happened to Claire… I’ll tell you the truth.”
