Why Should You Turn On the Bathroom Light When Sleeping in a Motel or Hotel?
Leaving the bathroom light on while sleeping in an unfamiliar hotel room may seem unnecessary, but this simple habit can provide a little extra visibility, help you navigate safely at night, and make it easier to respond quickly if something unexpected happens.
When you stay in a hotel or motel, everything around you is slightly different from home. The layout is unfamiliar, the furniture may be arranged differently, and you may not immediately know where the bathroom, door, light switches, or emergency exits are located.
During the daytime, none of this matters much.
But at 2 a.m., when you’re half asleep and suddenly need to get out of bed, even a familiar-looking hotel room can become surprisingly difficult to navigate.
This is one reason some travelers choose to leave the bathroom light on with the door slightly open while sleeping.
It isn’t a mandatory safety rule, and there is no special medical or scientific requirement that hotel guests keep the bathroom light on. However, there are several practical reasons why the habit can be useful.
