Why Should You Turn On the Bathroom Light When Sleeping in a Motel or Hotel? – Thebustednews

At home, you probably know exactly where everything is.

You can walk to the bathroom in the dark without thinking.

A hotel room is different.

You may have entered the room only a few hours earlier, and your brain has not yet developed the same spatial familiarity.

A visible bathroom doorway can serve as a fixed visual reference point.

If you wake up disoriented, you can immediately identify where you are in relation to the bed and bathroom.

This can be particularly helpful after traveling long distances, crossing time zones, or waking up from a deep sleep.

5. It May Help You Move More Safely During an Emergency

This is one area where a little preparation can make a difference.

If an emergency occurs during the night—such as a fire alarm, electrical problem, or other unexpected event—you may need to get out of the room quickly.

Knowing the route to the door is much more important than leaving the bathroom light on, but having some ambient light can make navigation easier.

Before going to sleep, take a few seconds to identify:

Where is the room entrance?

Where are the emergency stairs?

Where is the nearest exit?

Is there anything blocking the path?

Hotels generally provide evacuation information, and guests should familiarize themselves with the available escape routes.

Importantly, never rely on the bathroom light as your emergency lighting system. If the power fails, that light may go out too.
