For three seconds, nobody moved.
The garden that had been filled with Vanessa’s laughter suddenly became completely silent.
The scissors were still in her hand.
My silver hair was scattered across the roses and the grass like pieces of a life she believed she could destroy.
Chloe was the first one to notice him.
Her smile disappeared.
The champagne glass in her hand slowly lowered.
“Daniel…”
Vanessa froze.
I watched the confidence leave her face one layer at a time.
It was the first time that morning she looked afraid.
My son stood at the garden gate, still wearing the navy suit he had traveled in. His suitcase rested beside him. He must have come straight from the airport.
He had told everyone he would be away for another three days.
Vanessa thought she had time.
She thought she had control.
She thought she had removed every person who could expose her.
But she had forgotten one thing.
My son knew his mother.
And more importantly…
He knew his father.
