Abigail Riley froze in front of room 12 at the St. Jude Community Hospital in Savannah. Inside her purse was a lottery ticket worth twenty million dollars. She had arrived determined to change the life of Spencer, her only son, but that sentence pierced her heart before she could even knock on the door.

The door was ajar. Spencer was on the phone with a woman and had put it on speakerphone.

“Does not your conscience bother you?” the woman asked.
