Nathan signed the documents and held them out.

“You can go now.”

Eric’s jaw tightened, but he said nothing. He took the folder and left.

I remember thinking Nathan treated him like an employee who had overstayed his welcome.

I did not know then how wrong I was.

A week later, rain tapped against Nathan’s window while I adjusted the blanket over his legs.

He reached out and closed his fingers around my hand.

“I have one final request.”

“That sounds ominous.”

“It probably is.”

He looked toward the dark window.

“Pretend you’re my daughter until I’m gone.”

I thought I had misunderstood him.
