He saw the bucket under my ceiling.


He saw the patched window.


He saw the nearly empty shelf.


Still, he ate like refusing would insult me, and that was the first thing I respected about him.


The dog lay near my feet, but he did not sleep.


Every few seconds, his ears twitched toward the front door.


Then I heard it too.


Not thunder.


Not a branch.


A faint metallic knock, far away and wrong, like something heavy tapping against the frozen world.


The Marine stopped with the spoon halfway to his mouth.


The dog stood.


The room seemed to shrink around all three of us.


I asked if that was the storm.
